is a grass-roots project to help families dealing with AIDS in rural Malawi, Africa. It is sponsored by the Salt Spring Island Garden Club in British Columbia, Canada.
The project supports:
-
household food gardens. Seeds, fertilizers and hand implements are provided to poor households so they can grow their own food, improve their nutrition, and achieve food self-sufficiency.
-
school fees for students. School fees and supplies are provided to a number of poor children so that they can continue beyond primary school. Secondary education is not free in Malawi, but higher education is crucial in a country that is facing a large-scale loss of knowledge and skils as the adult generation is lost to AIDS.
-
food security initiatives. As funds permit, contributions are made to other small projects that support sustainable food production and agricultural knowledge.
The project has been raising funds since 2003 for families devastated by AIDS, primarily grandmothers and their orphaned grandchildren, widows, and their children. It is run entirely by volunteers, both in Canada and in Malawi.
