Eleven species and subspecies known as the California group or PCIs occur naturally in California, Oregon and Washington but also do well in coastal British Columbia.

They are described as an ecologically mountainous iris, growing in neutral or slightly acid gritty soil, well-drained in lightly wooded areas or in full sun here in coastal BC. They thrive where summers are long and dry, but tolerate rain and snow cover and some frost.

They grow from 10 to 18 inches tall and usually carry from two to three flowers per stem. They bloom from April to June.

In general, hybrids are hardier, easier and more rewarding to grow than the native species. All but one PCI are evergreen, which make them invaluable in our winter gardens. They grow well in rock gardens, borders, and in drifts in grassy areas.
